Founded in
1924 by Indena, the international journal Fitoterapia publishes innovative research on the chemistry, pharmacology and use of medicinal plants and their derivatives. It is still recognised as the world's premier source of information in this field.
Fitoterapia is the sector's most widely distributed specialist journal on a world-wide level. Supported by an internationally renowned editorial board, the journal has always attracted the most important contributions and has built up into a valuable work of reference for the scientific community all over the world: about 700 original scientific papers are received and screened for publication every year. Beginning 2001 the number of issues increased from 6 to 8 annually.
Fitoterapia journal has promoted and fostered the chemical and pharmacological study of medicinal plants inextricably linking the resurgence of phytotherapy research with Indena's remarkable growth. Indena has in fact carried out extensive research into important active principles such as the taxanes, used in important anti-cancer drugs, and guaranteed their industrial production. Indena is credited with pioneering the development of phytotherapy as a domain of specialised research that combines chemistry and pharmacology with botany. The journal Fitoterapia has provided the channel for bringing this knowledge to the attention of the entire international scientific community.
As of today, the journal has published 11 monographs devoted to plants fundamental to modern phytoterapy. These include: Aesculus hippocastanum L., Cucurbita pepo L., Ginkgo biloba L., Hypericum perforatum L., Prunus africana (Hook. f.) Kalkm., Serenoa repens (Bartram) J.K. Small, Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn., Urtica dioica L., Vaccinum myrtillus L., Valeriana officinalis L. and Vitis vinifera L.
Fitoterapia is distributed free of charge to universities in Africa and Asia.
Starting from 1999, the journal has been published by Elsevier in collaboration with Indena.
